A native of Los Angeles, Kenneth Gatewood grew up in a family of seven; four boys and three girls. He credits his mother and father for encouraging him to utilize his God given talent to create. I learned the importance of family values and togetherness, says Gatewood. We weren’t rich but we had each other. Gatewood’s fond childhood memories of family picnics, fishing trips and holiday celebrations are reflected in many of his paintings. He uses his family members and friends in many of his pieces. Mr. Gatewood’s love for children is evident and can be seen in his artwork. “I enjoy painting them,” says Gatewood. “Although I do not have any of my own, I have over 17 nephews and nieces who have helped me see the beauty of the world through a child’s eyes.”
Gatewood possesses an unyielding commitment to the youth of the inner city. His monthly visits to various elementary and junior high schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District offer artistic instruction and encouragement to the children and young adults, says Gatewood. “I want to emphasize to children the importance of education, respect and self-expression.”
Gatewood is most notably recognized for his world-renowned “baby sports images.” In 1995, Mr. Gatewood was the first African American artist to hold licenses from the NFL, NBA, MLB, MSL and NHL at the same time to do artwork.
Gatewood has released limited edition lithographs hand-signed by sports legends Dan Marino, Nola Ryan, Don Mattingly, Keyshawn Johnson and Cal Ripken Jr.
His list of collectors include the late Michael Jackson, Charles Barkley, Quincy Jones, Denzel Washington, the late Teena Marie, Jazz Great Gerald Albright, the late R&B singer Gerald Levert, Bryant Gumbell, LA News Anchor Pat Harvey, Tyler Perry, Queen Latifah, NBA Player Chris Paul, NBA Player Carmelo Anthony, NBA Analyst Chris Webber, NBA Team Miami Heat, golf legends Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, Baseball Great Cal Ripken, Football Great Dan Marino, The Naismith Foundating, USC, UCLA, Florida Gators, and Arizona State just to name a few.
